Ippudo

My very first blog post shall be dedicated to the love of my life - RAMEN! The Number 1 MUST TRY if you're a ramen fan like me - IPPUDO!!!!

Ippudo fb

Specially strongly recommend the Akamaru ramen (photo above). I also call it the 'red bowl ramen' because it comes in a red bowl while the other types come in white bowls.

From left: Akamaru, Karaka-men, Shiromaru (Ippudo)

FoodHold's review for Akamaru ramen:

Soup: Rich tonkotsu broth. Enhanced with the flavours of the dollop of miso paste and black garlic oil. Coupled with the fragrance of the spring onion, the combination of all makes the soup a MUST FINISH!

Noodle: Given a selection of soft, medium and hard noodles to choose according to your preference. The noodles was always cooked to the perfect timing, and never once was it overcooked or undercooked (yup, i went a lot of times! :P) The warmness of the noodles makes the eat even more satisfying during cold rainy days.

Ingredients: The buta bara (pork belly) was so thoroughly simmered that you could taste the sauce it was simmered in and fats would just melt in your mouth (really!). I love the combination with the black fungus too as it brings about different levels of tasting (口感) - smooth noodles, chewy meat, melting soft fats, crunchy black fungus. Their tamago (flavoured eggs) are also those half cooked, runny kind of egg and is definitely worth a try. But if you're feeling a little on budget, maybe next time..because the tamago is quite expensive, at $3 each...

Price: $16 for a bowl of ramen, without tamago. Add ons such as meat and tamago at additional price.

Ambience: Not a place for coffee-sipping and chit-chatting. More of eat-and-go! Because if not you're quite likely to get vengeful stares from the long queue of people outside. STRONGLY ADVISED TO GO DURING OFF PEAK HOURS. Unless you don't mind queueing. Usually around 20-30 min for weekday meal hours and at least 30 min for weekend meal hours.

Service: Swift. Probably also because they have to, if not the queue outside will most like reach The Lawry's (a restaurant just next door).

(My bowl of Akamaru ramen with Tamago ^0^)

The other types of ramen available are Shiromaru and Karaka-men. The former also comes in tonkotsu broth but is less rich than Akamaru. The latter is served with spicy miso paste which can be quite spicy after drinking the soup for a while (depends on your spicy tolerance level).

Another MUST-TRY at Ippudo is their GYOZA! The skin was thin and crisp, so there isn't any overwhelming floury taste to it. Pan fried to a perfect brown colour, skin at non-pan fried area was soft while the pan fried area was very fragrant (锅气). The meat filling was very well-marinated and springy (QQ!). To go with the vinegar and CHILLI OIL! The spiciness complements the tastiness of the succulent gyoza.
A plate of 6 for $8.

Sadly to say, there's not a lot of yummy ramen that is specially catered to the Singaporean taste bud. Ippudo is really the best one I've tried, out of all the other ramen place I've been to in Singapore. Currently still on a lookout for other yummy ramen, will keep you posted on The Food Hold if I do know of any! And, being located at Mandarin Gallery (Level 4), Ippudo is convenient to come by while shopping at Orchard area :)
